The Preston branch was formed in February 1977.
Beginners classes are held as required for new members and the branch also holds exhibitions and workshops from time to time. Refreshments are provided at each meeting at a nominal charge, and a raffle is held each month. Branch resources include:- The branch holds two microfiche readers and copies of microfiche produced by the society, including Preston Churches, the 1881 Census of Lancashire and the surrounding counties, and the UK International Genealogical Index by county.
The microfiche readers can be borrowed by members by arrangement with the microfiche secretary. There is a charge of one pound per week for the use of the reader which goes toward the cost of replacement bulbs. There is also a refundable deposit for the loan of the microfiche. The branch also has a number of CDs available to borrow.
The branch has a lending library from which books and guides can be borrowed on a monthly basis. There is a non-refundable 50p charge for each item borrowed from the library.
