A Dictionary of Occupational Terms

A Dictionary of Occupational Terms
A Dictionary of Occupational Terms

Occupations in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries based on the Classification of Occupations used in the Census of Population 1921 with a new introduction by Alan Gillie.

A unique and unrivalled guide to the world of work and business in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and an invaluable resource for:

• Family, local and community historians and genealogists

• Sociologists, economists, historical geographers and demographers

The Dictionary defines 29,106 terms covering 16,837 different occupations of people who worked in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. They are listed alphabetically, and the terms are also classified, to juxtapose descriptions of occupations of people who worked closely together to produce particular goods and services. Many of these occupations, and the terms used to describe them, are today generally unknown.
